Bryan Sutton at Merlefest 2006
Bryan Sutton showcases his new CD "Not Too Far From the Tree" at Merlefest 2006

Bryan Sutton's newest Sugar Hill release "Not Too Far From the Tree" pays tribute to his musical influences and heroes. The disc consists of Bryan playing in duo with such bluegrass legends as George Shuffler, Doc Watson, and Earl Scruggs, as well as some of Bryan's musical heroes such as Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, David Grier, Jack Lawrence, Russ Barenberg, Norman Blake, and Ricky Skaggs. He even picks one with his first guitar hero, his dad, Jerry Sutton.
At this year's Merlfest event (2006) Bryan brought some of these heroes up on stage to pick a few tunes with him. His father came up first, followed in order by Jerry Douglas, Jack Lawrence, George Suffler, and Tony Rice. For the finale Tony and Jerry both picked one with Bryan. The 45-minute set was one of the highlights for guitar players at an event which alerady is rich with guitar music and guitar heroes. Some photos are shown below.
