Hello
and welcome once again to Flatpicking Guitar Magazine’s free lesson
portion of our newsletter. Happy new year to all you e-flatpickers out
there. Thismonth I offer a cool bluegrass kick-off to the old song
“Nine Pound Hammer.”
“Nine
Pound Hammer” is a tune made famous by many notable flatpickers like
George Shuffler and Tony Rice to name a few. My lesson arrangement is
an homage to all the great versions I have heard over the years. It
Includes all the important melody notes along with a few licks to spice
it up.To
play along with the lesson recording you’ll want to have your capo at
the second fret. Most fiddle and mandolin players will play this song
out of the key of A which is why I chose to record “Nine Pound Hammer”
in A. The use of playing A songs out of G position is very popular
amongst us flatpickers.I
hope you enjoy working on this cool kick-off and adding it into your
list of songs. As always if you have any questions or comments on this
e-lesson just drop me a line at [email protected]
