Flatpicking Guitar MagazineFree Monthly LessonFebruary 2015Cripple Creekarranged for Flatpicking Guitar Magazine by Mickey AbrahamDownload PDF | Download mp3 Hello and welcome once again to Flatpicking Guitar Magazine’s free lesson portion of our monthly newsletter. For those that follow these e-lessons each month you know that I often enjoy teaching obscure or unique tunes. This month I decided to not do that. This month’s tune is the perennial parking lot standard “Cripple Creek.” If by some chance this tune has passed you by, then this will be the perfect lesson to quickly learn how to play a true classic. It continually amazes me how the internet has expanded our ability to share music. For this reason, I’d like to tell you guys about a new Facebook group that I started with my good friend, and insane mandolin player, Chris Henry. The group is called “Tune of the Week.” I’d like to invite all my newsletter readers to check it out. The idea is that each week we feature a tune and you guys video your version and submit it. It is by no means a contest and it is certainly not to see who has the greatest chops. It’s purpose is to share music with others in a respectful environment. You can check it out at this URL: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1400162250286801/ I chose “Cripple Creek” for this month’s e-lesson because it is going to be the “Tune of the Week.” I am looking forward to hearing all of your submissions. The group is not exclusive to guitar so spread the word to all your friends who play fiddle, mandolin, banjo, or anything else. It is very simple to post videos straight to Facebook from your smartphone. As far as this month’s lesson arrangement, I kept it very simple. Two versions; the first is the way I’d teach it to a beginner student—the second employs some nifty old-time rhythm variations. There are no hot licks or crazy stuff this month, just the melody to one of the most famous fiddle tunes of all time. I hope you all have fun learning this basic version of “Cripple Creek.” Show it to all your friends and then tell them to post on “Tune of the Week.” As always, if you have any questions about this months e-lesson or any questions about my new Facebook group don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected]
