Flatpicking Carter Style - 200 page book with 165 audio tracks (in mp3 format)
This book is the second in our Flatpicking Guitar Magazine archival book series. All of the material in this book has been taken from articles that appeared in Flatpicking Guitar Magazine during our 20 years of publication. In putting together this collection of articles from Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, we have selected articles that not only directly presented the basic Carter Style technique, but we have also presented articles with arrangements that embellish or, to quote our columnist Orrin Star, “super-charge” this technique. Many of our guitar heroes, such as Doc Watson, Clarence White, and Norman Blake would implement Carter style strums in their solos, but embellish them with other techniques, such as crosspicking, scale runs, slurs, double-stops, and syncopated timing. In this book you will find many examples of tunes that include elements of the Carter style mixed in with a variety of other flatpicking techniques. So, there is material in this book for everyone from the beginner to the advanced player.
From the Editor, Dan Miller: "With over 40 years of experience playing the guitar (starting in 1979) and having interviewed nearly 300 guitar players during the 20 years that I published Flatpicking Gutiar Magazine (1996-2016), and having taught hundreds of students at workshops, camps, clinics, and private lessons, I am convinced that the best way to learn the flatpicking style of acoustic guitar is to first learn how to play solid bass/strum (boom/chick) rhythm that incorporates the use of bass runs, and then learn to play solid Carter style lead. Gaining experience with these two skills will give the student a very strong foundation from which to build all other skills and techniques."
