Nearly all roots music that is played in the United States today, and identified as “American Music,” can be traced back to some form of gospel music. Blues music, rhythm and blues, soul, and even rock and roll can be traced back to the old Negro spirituals. Country, folk, and bluegrass music all have strong roots in Southern gospel music. Spiritual music, hymns, praise music, and gospel music have all played a big roll in the development of American music and gospel songs still have a place in the traditional folk, country, and bluegrass music that is performed today.
Music played in church, focused on praise and worship, is an important part of many musical lives.
